Tales from Tokyo - 01: The Battle of Bubaigawara

Walking around Tokyo, one can come across the interesting and unusual. I found this monument when a friend and I were visiting Fuchū in the west of Tokyo. It's located in a park in Bubaigawara and marks the site of a battle that was fought there on 15-16 May 1333. It occurred during the Genkō War (1331-1333), which was a civil war fought between the Emperor Go-Daigo and the Kamakura Shogunate. The Imperial forces during the battle were commanded by Nitta Yoshisada while those of the Shogunate were led by Hōjō Yasuie. The Imperial forces were victorious and marked the end of the Kōzuke-Musashi Campaign. A statue of Nitta Yoshisada can be seen just outside the Bubaigawara station.

This battle was fought on the banks of the Tama in what was then Musashi province. It was a sizeably affair, the Imperial army numbering 100,000 troops and the Kamakura forces totaling 207,000.
